Dr. Smylie qualified from the Middlesex Hospital Medical School, London University in 1982. This was followed by various hospital posts in London. She then joined the British Army on a 3-year Short Service Commission and spent the 3 years as a GP trainee looking after the servicemen, their families and some of the local population in Cyprus and Gibraltar.

She worked as a General Practitioner in Jersey, Channel Islands and for the past 10 years in New Zealand. Her skills cover the complete range of family medicine and for the past 2 years she was living on an island off the coast of Auckland - there is no hospital on the island so the general practitioner manages all the patients with 'emergency' cases being taken to Auckland by helicopter.

Carol has been married to Dr. Graeme Smylie for over 20 years and they have 4 teenage children. Her interests outside medicine include various sports and she is a keen organic gardener.
