H1N1 better known as Swine Flu, presents with signs & symptoms consistent with an "influenza" like illness
- Fever, (Temperature greater than) 37.8
- Cough
- Sore Throat
- Runny nose
- Headache
- Muscle aches & vomiting & diarrhea in some severe cases
Transmission or spread of the H1N1 virus is by Droplet transmission - eg. "coughing". Droplets from a cough of sneeze of an infected person moves through the air. Germs can be spread when a person touches resipiratory droplets from another person, or on a surface of desk tops or door handles.
Prevention - Protect your health!
- Cover your nose & mouth wihen you cough or sneeze. Throw the ittue into the trash after use.
- Wash your hands with soap & water especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol based cleaners are also effective.
- Avoid contact with sick people
Treatment
If you live in an area where people have been identified with H1N1 flu, & you become ill:
- Stay at home.
- Avoid Contact with other people.
- Drink plenty of fluids.
Emergency Warning Signs
If you become ill & experience any of the following warning signs, seek emergency medical care:
Children
- Fast or difficult breathing.
- Bluish or grey skin colour.
- Poor oral take.
- Severe or persistent vomiting.
- Drowsiness, poor interaction.
- Persistent high fever & irritability.
- Flu symptoms improve, but return with high fever & a persistent cough.
Adults
- Difficulty breathing, shortness of breath.
- Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen.
- Sudden dizziness.
- Confusion.
- Severe or persistent vomiting.
- Flu like symptoms improve, but return with fever & worse cough.
