Dr. Shola Faniran graduated from the University of Ilorin, Nigeria in 1991 before relocating to Australia. She obtained a PhD in Medicine from the University of Sydney Australia in 1998. The focus of Dr. Faniran's PhD was childhood asthma where she investigated the risk factors, characteristics and management of asthma in children, both in Australia and Nigeria. After her PhD, Dr. Faniran went on to complete her paediatric training at the Sydney Children’s Hospital and the Children’s Hospital at Westmead. Dr. Faniran is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (Paediatrics and Child Health). Dr. Faniran has broad experience in general paediatrics having worked in the emergency, haematology/oncology, cardiology, respiratory, endocrinology, psychological medicine and neonatal intensive care units of several major hospitals in Australia.
Dr. Faniran has a special interest in child behaviour and development, child mental health, child protection and child public health. She completed advanced training as a developmental paediatrician. Dr Faniran was the Clinical Director at the Royal Far West Children’s Health Scheme, Sydney Australia. Royal Far West is a non-governmental organization that provides health care for over 3,500 children from remote and rural NSW annually. Majority of patients presented behaviour problems, autism, developmental delay, learning difficulties and chronic health problems. As the Clinical Director, Dr. Faniran was responsible for the development and implementation of a number of special initiatives including a literacy program for indigenous children and a residential healthy eating and activities program to combat overweight and obesity.
Dr. Faniran maintains a high standard of patient care. She has published widely and contributed to the normative literature in children health. Her publications include refereed academic papers in leading international journals such as Archives of disease in Childhood, Chest, Thorax, European Respiratory Journal and Journal of Peadiatrics and Child Health. Dr. Faniran has also presented several conference papers in child health and was an invited speaker at the Royal Australasian College of Physicians congress.
Dr. Faniran is committed to a child and family centered focus in her practice, understanding the crucial role of the family in the healthy development of children. She encourages active participation of the whole family and young person when identifying appropriate management strategies and services for her patients. She also welcomes and encourages feedback from clients and their families on how to better improve our services.
